What is the difference between laminating resin and finishing resin?
A laminating resin contains no wax and the surface remains tacky so the layers of resins will bond better during laminating. A finishing resin contains wax to create a seal so the resin fully hardens and isn’t tacky. It’s meant to be used as a final or finishing coat over laminating resin.
What is finishing resin used for?
Because it contains wax, the finishing resin is typically used for one-coat glasswork or as a final, tack-free, sealer coat over tacky polyester laminating resin coats. It cures clear and hard to resist scratches and staining.
Does the finishing resin “cure” the laminating resin and how many coats are needed to seal it?
Yes, it will cure on its own. Finishing resin contains wax, which enables the resin to cure. Laminating resin does not contain wax, so it will not cure. When you are done building up layers, you will need to apply a coat of finishing resin. One good complete coat is all you need to cure the previous laminating layers.
How much does the finishing resin shrink?
All polyester resins shrink slightly. Depending on your project, the odds are high that it is negligible and won’t affect the outcome. Epoxy resins shrink less.
What is the shelf life of finishing resin once opened?
The shelf life is about 6 months to 1 year. To ensure maximum stability and maintain optimum resin properties, resins should be stored in closed containers at temperatures below 77°F, and away from heat sources and sunlight.
What is the working time for this product?
The gel time depends on the temperature during the time you are using it and how much hardener you use. Adjust the hardener level to slow down or speed up gel time. Cooler temperatures may require a higher percentage of hardener than warmer temperature conditions. At 70 degrees F, one teaspoon of hardener per quart of resin will give you about 20 minutes to gel time, 2 teaspoons will give 15-20 minutes and 3 teaspoons will give about 10 minutes.
