- IMPORTANT! Environmental conditions are extremely important to the clarity and quality of the cure. Depending on the mass of mixed epoxy used in a single pour, the pour depth, and the ambient temperature, excessive heat may build up from the reaction, causing potential yellowing, cracks, or other shrinkage. Helping to dissipate the heat may help promote the best results. For the epoxy to cure fully, the ambient temperature must be between 60°F and 80°F. When pouring for larger projects, such as slabs or tables, do not exceed a pour depth of 2″ to prevent yellowing or excessive heat from the cure.
- Personal safety: Work in a well-ventilated area. Wear gloves, eye protection, face protection, and clothing protection.
- UV-resistant formula is not intended for outdoor applications with prolonged sunlight exposure.
- Do not place items hotter than 125°F on the cured surface.
Step Pouring ThickSet Fathom – How Long to Wait Between Pours
When pouring additional layers of ThickSet Fathom, it’s important to note the following:
- When your project involves pouring multiple layers of ThickSet Fathom, it is extremely important to wait until the previous layer has cooled
sufficiently, to prevent surface distortion, yellowing, or other negative effects of excessive heat while curing. - Conservatively, the safest interval to wait is a minimum of 36 hours for ThickSet Fathom to cure prior to applying more, regardless of pour depth and ambient temperature.
- For applications when it’s important to have the shortest interval for multiple pours, wait at least 24 hours, then use an infrared thermometer to measure the temperature at the center of the epoxy mass, where the highest temperature will be recorded.
- Wait until the previous pour has dropped below 85°F, and the previous epoxy pour has firmed up enough that it will not distort when liquid epoxy is poured on it — it is likely that the previous layer will still be soft.
- Always follow the maximum pour depth based on the volume of ThickSet Fathom.

The maximum pour depth for castings using less than 1 gallon of epoxy is 3″ per single layer; for slab pours and river tables, the maximum pour depth is 2″. For best results, do not use ThickSet Fathom for pours less than 1″ deep as doing so will extend the required cure time.
What is the recommended pour depth for slab pours and river tables when using TotalBoat ThickSet Fathom Epoxy?
For river tables, slabs and other large pours, do not exceed a pour depth of 2″ to prevent yellowing, cracking or shrinkage. When the desired thickness is greater than 2″, step pouring with multiple layers will achieve the best results. When doing step pours, allow a minimum of 36 hours cure time before applying another layer of ThickSet Fathom.
What are the recommended application temperatures for pouring TotalBoat ThickSet Fathom Epoxy?
When doing thicker pours (any smaller castings up to 3″, or larger slab pours up to 2″), it is strongly recommended to maintain 75°F or lower. For thinner pours (smaller castings under 1-½” or slab pours under 1″), it is recommended to use the product between 70-80°F. To help speed up the cure for all applications, you can increase the heat after the reaction reaches peak exotherm – up to 90°F.
Is TotalBoat ThickSet Fathom Epoxy food safe?
Yes. Once the ThickSet Fathom Epoxy surface has cured completely, it is BPA-free, making it safer for potential contact with food.
Is ThickSet Fathom Epoxy UV resistant?
TotalBoat ThickSet Fathom cures to a crystal clear finish that won’t yellow, but is not meant for continuous UV exposure. If your cured piece will be used outdoors, apply a UV-stable varnish or clear coat product, for maximum UV resistance and to avoid cloudiness or yellowing.
Can I tint ThickSet Fathom?
ThickSet Fathom can be tinted with a variety of epoxy-safe coloring agents, including mica powder, universal tints, pigment dispersions, and alcohol ink pigments. Mix the epoxy resin and hardener together thoroughly before adding tints.
How long does ThickSet Fathom take to cure?
The full cure time for ThickSet Fathom is 5-10 days, depending on the mass of mixed epoxy.
How soon can I demold castings made with ThickSet Fathom?
The minimum demold time for deeper or larger pours is 48 hours, and 72 hours for smaller pours. If the epoxy feels soft or rubbery at all, it is extremely important not to demold yet.
Can cured ThickSet Fathom be turned on a lathe?
